Tempus Fugit

Time Flies…

Look to your arms….(or in this case your legs)

It is 0540hrs….why, might you ask am I up at 0540hrs?

Well that would be because I have just come off a 12 hour Emergency Department shift.

I have to say I am intrigued and enthused about a career path where I can get up at 4pm and goto work at 5pm. None of this ungodly pre-midday hours shite.

Was rather busy post origin. A couple of attempted suicides, A crumble who didn’t last, A patient with acute pulmonary oedema (LMNOP if second year serves me correct), Unstable angina…….I spent an hour or so suturing up a GPFO (Got Pissed, Fell Over)…who was rather drunk and amusing to listen to whilst I attended to the laceration on his forehead. The only problem was everytime he laughed his head moved. I was impressed with the final product, as was the consultant.

The rest of the night was almost uneventful. I set about reading a textbook…and unbeknownst to me, bumped the armed intruder silent alarm with my knee. It was a bit of a rude shock when three security guards descended in rapid succession upon the department. Ooops.

Apparently I am not the first to have done this. The security guard, after calling off the cavalry, stopped to chat and told me about some of the genuine calls they have had…including large concealed knives, doctors being held at gunpoint….the list goes on. A tad scary me thinks.

What kind of a profession am I heading to? Still…risks aside, I think I could certainly consider Emergency Medicine as a career.
