Look to your arms….(or in this case your legs)

It is 0540hrs….why, might you ask am I up at 0540hrs?
Well that would be because I have just come off a 12 hour Emergency Department shift.
I have to say I am intrigued and enthused about a career path where I can get up at 4pm and goto work at 5pm. None of this ungodly [...]

w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t! w00t!

Am ecstatic this afternoon.
Woke around 4pm, stumbled out to kitchen to make coffee. Checked email…..
There’s an email from the School of Medicine saying that my grade had been reviewed from last year and subsequently changed.
I logged onto SI-net to discover my grade had been upgraded….TO A SEVEN!!!!!!! woooooohooooo!
This would only be the second [...]

Fiat Lux!

Fiat Lux – let there be light. And there was light. And the light was good.
But first things first.
The day did not begin with a bang. I suspect it began with a snort as I awoke to the godawful sound of my many alarms – strategically placed in assorted hiding spots in [...]

The Electric Breakfast Show

Gooooood morning and welcome to The Electric Breakfast Show pumping up the joules for a high voltage show (if you will pardon the shocking humour **groan**).
For those of you on the depressed side, we’ll get you pumping with a dose of electroconvulsive therapy and follow that jolting experience which is a fitting start to the [...]

The most important skill…

Never mind learning resuscitation skills….never mind learning about drugs….never mind communication skills….
…the most important skill you need as a doctor (apparently) is…..”Rock, Paper, Scissors (RPS)”.
RPS is the most important skill when it comes down to crucial decisions about patient care….or so it would seem after my day today. No less than three times were [...]

The Ward Call Commando Course….

Five hours in theatre.
Pus abounded.
Most impressive was the cottage-cheese butt-volcano…. a multiple headed pus-filled monster of an abcess.
Plenty of caseous discharge prior to it’s incision and drainage.
I recall the famous words of my micro lecturer….
Never let the sun go down on undrained pus
The anaesthetist who I was shadowing decided [...]

Hold That Life!

Grrr.
It feels like I am going to have to put my life on hold for the next little while which sucks!
Tucking fypical (gotta love those spoonerisms)…just as I have myself a semblance of a social life and things to do, places to go and people to see…..(or is that things to go, people [...]

Number 96!

Egads! It’s crept up on me. I was not expecting to be sub-100 so quickly. Exams-ho!
But hopefully that means I will be over them quickly too. I want this whole process to be like a bandaid removal – quick and hopefully relatively painless.
I have managed to pull reasonable results [...]

Whither Theatre

My dear friend Theresa so aptly pointed out that I could in fact spend my time in theatre assisting surgeons for six months of the year (kind of like a supporting actor) and make enough to be able to spend the second six months of the year treading the boards in a theatre of a [...]

Get off my table!!!

Among my discussions today with the registrar I learnt just how complicated things get when someone dies on the table.
And apparently as soon as they’re declared, if they’re on the table, you have to just leave them where they are and walk away and wait for the police to come and investigate.
And if there is [...]
